Transformation Challenge

The client loved their original 1950s log structure but desperately needed modern thermal comfort, a master suite, and an open entertaining area. Rather than tearing down the logs, we restored them as the guest wing and linked them via a 20-foot glass bridge to our new cantilevered pavilion.

Design Intent & Light Strategy

Subservience to the wild coastal topography. The roofline mirrors the slope of the windswept white pines, and the zinc panels will weather into a muted matte grey over the coming decades.

Artisan Craft & Engineering

Zero-threshold frameless glass link; custom fireplace formed from an in-situ granite boulder blasted during footing preparation; hand-oiled western red cedar soffits.

“Building on an island in Georgian Bay is notoriously difficult. Phinski managed barges, crane lifts, and rock drilling with seamless calm. The finished home is absolute poetry.”
